This is the real jewel of Capraia Island: her coast, her inlets, the crystalline water, sheer cliffs above the sea 300 mt high, sea gulls flying everywhere, the chance to enjoy a real unique sea, a sea that
cannot be found anywhere else in the Tirreno sea. The side of the island towards the East, towards the continent is rich of inlets dominated by old control towers that were built by the Republic of Genova, and were meant to be a contrast to the landing of the Siracens pirates. Sloping coasts sweetly to the sea give you the chance to have a swim even in law waters, sometimes into shoals but mostly into extremely clear waters. There is only one beach, Cala della Mortola, which is reachable only by boat or with a good taxi-boat service from the port. The rest of the inlets are all hard rocks reachable from the sea or, in some cases like Cala del Ceppo or Cala dello Zurletto from land. The South part of
the Island is unforgettable: Cala Rossa, an old volcanic cone, that has collapsed from one side, gives you an unforgettable sight . Punta dello Zenobito with its majestic tower over grey basalt is a unique show. The West coast side, with Corsica on the horizon, is absolutely grand. This is exactly where you really perceive that wild feeling of the island, her being an “Island” in the proper sense of the word. Having a swim in these waters is like an elixir of life, it’s like being an integrant part of a unique place, something special and absolutely unforgettable.

Capraia Island belongs to the National park of the Tuscan Archipelago, a protected area that includes 18000
hectares of dry land and 60000 hectares of marine area. The reason for having formed a marine and earthly park in this area is easy to explain: clear and pure unspoilt water, the difference of the deep seas (soundings) and of
the coast of each Island and the emergence of earth in parts where the surrounding bathymetry is rather high, make of this area a biologically perfect place both for migratory and non-migratory marine fauna. Besides , Capraia Island has got the only natural storage of sweet water existing among the Archipelago. Being one of the most famous “migratory fauna corridor” between Europe and Africa, is a constrained area for stop and reproduction for a huge amount of different winged animals. Capraia has also a great quantity of endemism (both vegetal and animal). Being situated in the midst of the “Shrine of Cetaceans”, it is easy to meet shoals of dolphins and whales. The Island is, in short, a small natural paradise close to our cities, an unexpected oasis of wild and fascinating nature that absolutely deserves being visited.

The Island of Capraia has just one intimate neat and little town made of a tourist port and of a town on a promontory that dominates the port. At first the Island was populated in an area so called “piano”, in the inner

part of the island, but people moved out to live where the actual town is now, back in year 1000. The reconstruction of the town, and later on of the port, was made after World War II around the 60’s, when the inhabitants abandoned the island and some “adventurous” people arrived on the island and began to rebuild over the existing ruins some private homes. Today, the town is nice and well kept, typical for its lanes and sloping little roads that go from Fort San Giorgio to the lighthouse of Punta Ferratone. Here, you can see neat apartments and shops. The port is now the centre of a small marina; it is a lively and cheerful place during summer time. It is linked to the town centre by a drive way, 800 mt long, or you can reach the town by walking through a panoramic road built during Napoleon times.
